Notes: Changing Fractions to Decimals

FDP refers to changing fractions to decimals to percents and back again.

Changing Fractions to Decimals is not a new concept for 6th grade students...they have seen this in both 4th and 5th grade.  This is the first year that they MUST be able to make these conversions without any assistance or prompts.  As "boring" as it is to do...students must divide to find their answers.

A few students have caught onto the concept that IF they can easily turn the DENOMINATOR into a multiple of 10 (10, 100, 1000...) then they can quickly make an equivalent fraction...then read the fraction and write it as a decimal.

An example of this would be....3/4.  Multiply both the numerator and denomination by 25...so you get 75/100.  Now read it...it says 75 hundredths.  Write it...   0.75.  Ta-Da!!!  you made a decimal without division.

Remember that this only works if the denominator is a 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, or 50.
